SUCCESS STORY: CCS Delivers Fastest Broadband Speeds In Cornwall

We're delighted that our Metnet 60G technology is being harnessed by Wildanet to deliver gigabit wireless broadband to Liskeard – the first location in Cornwall to benefit from the fastest broadband speeds available.

With gigabit speeds only usually available with FTTP (fibre-to-the-premises) connections, Wildanet looked to CCS to deliver an innovative wireless solution leveraging our Metnet 60G mmWave fixed wireless access technology – helping to end the region’s reliance on outdated copper infrastructure.

“Gigabit internet is 40 times faster than the average connection, allowing download speeds of up to 1 gigabit per second. At Wildanet, we are absolutely delighted to be supporting Liskeard to access this incredible resource, especially at such a crucial time when so many people need fast internet speeds for home-working,” comments Ian Calvert, CEO at Wildanet.

FOCUS ON AUSTRALIA: Insight from Anthony Camilleri, ADTRAN’s CTO, APAC

Spurred by the pandemic that brought to light the need for superior broadband connectivity everywhere, governments and communities are making the case for Gigabit Societies now more than ever before. As a consequence, “Gigabit over the air” is rapidly gaining momentum as a scalable alternative to fixed broadband, as Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) is seen as the solution to faster rollout of broadband services in regions where access to fiber, copper, or cable is very cost-prohibitive. Technological advances in network performance improvement, a meaningful drop in the price of FWA customer premise equipment (CPE) and government subsidies availability and regulation make for a perfect storm to propel FWA penetration globally.

This is especially true in Australia as the Australian government works to address the nation’s vast digital divide. In August 2019, Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) made available shared access mmWave spectrum under class licensing arrangements in the 60GHz band. The variations to the Radiocommunications (Low Interference Potential Devices) Class Licence 2015 were a result of industry consultation to update and expand 60GHz (57-71GHz) arrangements for data communications systems, including 5G. Specifically, the variations were to:

  • add the 66-71GHz frequency band; and
  • update existing arrangements in the 57-66GHz band.

Demand for higher frequencies has increased exponentially and continues to do so, but only limited spectrum remains, while most of it is licensed. 60 GHz is a license-free frequency band that has many advantages over lower frequency bands. It enables two-way wireless communications at data rates previously thought to be on achievable with fiber. In addition to the high-data rates that can be accomplished in this spectrum, energy propagation in the 60GHz band has unique characteristics that make possible many other benefits, such as excellent immunity to interference, high security, and frequency reuse.

With the huge potential of high bit rate transmission and flexibility, 60GHz bandwidth is seen as a good candidate for high transmission/backhaul applications such as:

  • small cells
  • fibre extension technologies such as FTTB Gfast services
  • High Availability networks, adding redundant links where path diversity for fixed line is required

Regional Network Overbuilders plan on using mmWave where fibre deployments are challenging. Service Providers are looking for speed of deployment to lock in customers in dense Multi-Dwelling Unit environments. Service providers are looking to pair the mmWave tech within building tech like Gfast, where Gfast technology uses in building copper tails for gigabit handoff and the uplink traffic is carried by Metnet 60G as high bit rate transmission to the nearest Fibre handoff points in the area.

ADTRAN’s partnership with CCS brings the Metnet 60G node to Australia, where it is ideally positioned to be the solution of choice for FWA over the unlicensed 60GHz spectrum. The form factor of Metnet 60G systems is many form factors smaller than competing systems that use lower frequencies. Hence, Metnet 60G node can be easily deployed on readily available infrastructure such as light poles. The ability to power the Metnet 60G nodes using PoE technology all but eliminates the need for service providers to find ways to build AC power in outdoor deployment environments to power the node.

A 25-year veteran in the Australian telecommunications Industry, Anthony Camilleri is ADTRAN’s Chief Technology Officer for the APAC region. Prior to joining ADTRAN, Anthony held Senior Leadership positions within several leading telecommunications companies across Australia, including the National Broadband Network, Telstra, Optus, Vocus, and Uecomm. A leader within the industry, he holds several industry certifications in addition to a Bachelor of Engineering degree with first-class honors from Victoria University.

NEWS: CCS listed in UK’s first 5G Supplier Directory

We’re proud to be listed in the UK’s first 5G Supplier Directory, a new initiative from the UK government’s Department of Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS), working through UK5G. The directory has been created harness efficiencies in building effective 5G innovation trials within the UK, with the aim of encouraging and supporting 5G testbeds and trials through a shared model.

You can access the directory and explore technology suppliers here.

NEWS: CCS features on new TIP Playbook for Smart Cities

CCS's next-generation network deployments feature in the new Playbook for Smart Cities from Telecom Infra Project. This new resource – developed from the Smart City Connectivity sub-group within TIP’s mmWave Networks Project Group – provides guidance to help streamline and accelerate network deployments, covering topics including smart city service requirements, an overview of mmWave technology, mmWave spectrum and deployment regulation and best practices recommendations.

The "City Success Cases" section highlights our Metnet 60GHz network rolled out by Ontix to deliver gigabit broadband service in London's Soho. The playbook also showcases MicroNät's deployment of our 60GHz self-organising network technology in Sweden, plus our 60GHz mmWave trial in the City of Bath, where we provided gigabit backhaul to support interactive 5G smart tourism applications, as part of for the UK government-backed 5G Smart Tourism project.

COMMENTARY: CCS supports launch of rural broadband schemes in UK & US

CCS welcomes the announcement by the UK’s Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) that 50,000 rural Welsh homes and businesses may be eligible for broadband upgrades thanks to a new collaboration between the UK and Welsh governments.  The scheme will help cover the upfront costs of installing new gigabit-capable internet connections, with the maximum funding available through each voucher now doubled to £7,000 for SMEs and £3,000 for residential premises.

Our Metnet 60G solution has been deployed to enable Gigabit broadband for homes in rural areas including the trial in Monmouthshire in Wales as part of an innovative DCMS-backed 5G Pilot, delivered last year by our partners Broadway Partners, and we welcome this new collaboration and expanded scheme to boost the connectivity of even more rural communities in Wales.

In the US, earlier this year our partner ADTRAN announced the launch of the industry’s broadest portfolio of broadband access solutions available for the Rural Digital Opportunity Fund (RDOF) program. This represents the world’s largest broadband stimulus programme to bring high-speed broadband to rural America.

CCS’s Metnet 60G mesh millimeter wave Fixed Wireless Access technology is well-placed to play a key role in delivering the fibre extension solutions to realise the RDOF program ambitions.  If you’d like to find out more, just get in touch with us.

INDUSTRY: CCS now a member of UKWISPA

CCS is pleased to announce that we are now a member of the UK Wireless Internet Service Providers Association (UKWISPA) – the official trade body for the fixed wireless access industry in the UK.  We are looking forward to contributing to UKWISPA as it works to help government bodies and the regulator understand the needs and the opportunities offered by the UK FWA community to improve the UK broadband landscape.

AWARD: Partner Ontix shortlisted for Wireless Broadband Alliance honour
