CCS Wins Key Industry Award for Ultra-Fast, Next-Generation Backhaul Network in London’s Square Mile

CCS takes top honours in “Excellence in Commercial Deployment (Urban)” category at Small Cell Forum Small Cell Awards 2018

Cambridge Communication Systems (CCS) Limited has been named the Winner of the Excellence in Commercial Deployment (Urban) Award at the prestigious Small Cell Forum (SCF) Small Cell Awards 2018. The honour, given in recognition of CCS’s world-leading deployment of an ultra-fast, next-generation small cell backhaul network in the City of London, was announced at the SCF Small Cell Awards ceremony at SCWS World in London on 22nd May.

A panel of independent judges – including some of the world's leading telecom analysts, commentators and business leaders – were highly impressed by the wireless backhaul network CCS has deployed in the challenging environment of the Square Mile. The network is built on CCS Metnet – the world’s only self-organising microwave backhaul – operating in the licensed area-based 28GHz band. This solution is now live and delivering a significant boost in browsing speeds, and access to high-bandwidth services, such as video streaming.

Thanks to this successful implementation, the City of London now boasts one of the fastest wireless network speeds in the world, providing a major boost to London’s ambitions as a 5G-ready, world-leading Smart City.

Lead judge John Tanner from Disruptive Asia commented: “This is an outstanding case study of the unique criteria and challenges of dense urban deployment scenarios, particularly in terms of backhaul design. Extra points for not only pulling it off, but also future-proofing it for the next ‘G’.”

The successful small cell backhaul deployment is one phase of an ambitious next-generation network designed to boost coverage and capacity across the Square Mile. The project – awarded by City of London Corporation to CTIL, working in partnership with O2 – combines high speed free public Wi-Fi in the UK with a Nokia Flexi Zone 4G small cell network, both backhauled by CCS. Small cells and Wi-Fi access points have been installed on street furniture, with the “de minimis” form factor of the Metnet nodes ensuring unobstrusive deployment throughout the City’s historic streets.

Commenting on the award, CCS CEO Steve Greaves said: “We are absolutely delighted to have been recognised by the Small Cell Forum with this award. The entire CCS team is very proud to have been instrumental in delivering a next-generation wireless network in London, working alongside O2, CTIL, The City of London and our project partners. The quality and performance of our Metnet system is a critical factor in the success of this deployment, and it is fantastic that this shone through to the awards judges.”
